Privacy

Privacy by Architecture

Not only by policy

SideKids is built on a simple principle: whatever can be stored and processed on the child's device or the family's own server, is. No SideKids app sends data to third parties to provide its core function.

Core Privacy Principles

1. Local first

Whatever can be stored and processed on the child's device or the family's own server, is. No SideKids app sends data to third parties to provide its core function.

2. Accounts stay server-side

Credentials for external services (e.g. a cloud photo library) exist only on the family server. The child's device never holds account secrets.

3. The private network is the default boundary

Family services (photo server, screen-time server, media library) are reachable only inside the family's private network (VPN/mesh). Nothing is exposed to the public internet unless a function explicitly requires it.

4. No telemetry

SideKids apps contain no analytics, no crash reporters that phone home, no advertising SDKs.

5. Data minimization for children specifically

Location clustering happens without external geocoding services; face recognition is either fully switchable-off or not built at all; social features default to private.

Data Inventory

Component Local (Device) Family Server External
SidePlay Media, favorites, resume Media library (self-hosted) None required
SideTube Watch progress, time budgets None YouTube APIs (optional, parent approval step)
SideFoto Photos, thumbnails, sync state Originals, previews, shares Optional cloud import (server-to-server only)
SideLimit Rules, usage counters (enforced locally) Rule sync, family accounts None
SideHome Launcher settings — Optional weather (opt-in)
SidePix Drafts, session Posts, comments, accounts Push transport; optional geocoding (opt-in)

Logs

Servers keep operational logs only, on the family server, with no third-party log shipping. Logs contain no message contents.

Parent and Child Accounts

Children are first-class users with their own accounts. Parent capabilities are limited, visible to the child, and designed to be reduced over time.

No SideKids component gives parents access to:

  • Message contents
  • Browsing history
  • Location trails
  • Screen contents

These limits are architectural, not merely policy. The capabilities are not built.

What SideKids Never Does

  • Sell, share or transmit children's data to third parties
  • Profile usage for recommendations or engagement
  • Hide a data flow from the child that the parents can see

App-specific: SideTube (iOS)

This section is the privacy policy for the SideTube iOS app published by SideKids. Last updated: 31 August 2026.

Data stored on the device only

  • Child profiles (name, age band, settings), the parent-approved whitelist and review decisions
  • Watch history per profile (video, duration, time) — used for "Continue watching" and the daily time limit
  • The parent PIN as a cryptographic hash in the device keychain

None of this leaves the device. Deleting the app deletes the data.

Requests to YouTube (Google)

To display and play videos the app contacts YouTube services (oEmbed, RSS feeds, public channel pages, optionally the YouTube Data API, and the embedded YouTube player). Google receives the IP address and the requested video/channel identifiers. No user accounts are used and no identifiers of the child are transmitted. The embedded player is subject to Google's privacy policy. SideTube sets no advertising cookies; a minimal consent cookie is sent only for reading public channel pages within a single request.

Recommendations

If a video is recommended via Messages or Signal, the title and link are handed to that app. SideTube does not see recipients and stores nothing. In child mode this requires the parent PIN.

Children

SideTube is made for children under parental supervision, including children under 13. It collects no personal data from children and shares none with third parties (COPPA / GDPR Art. 8). SideTube itself shows no ads and contains no analytics and no third-party SDKs; the embedded YouTube player may show YouTube ads on some videos.
